Women and Swimming

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Q1-Is it permissible for women to go swimming with other Muslim and non Muslim women, the Muslim women have there Aurah covered and the non Muslims have some parts of there Aura open?

Q2-Is it permissible for males who have there Aurah covered  to play soccer with other males who have some parts of there Aurah uncovered?

Answer:

  1. The ‘Aurah of a female from another female is from the navel to the knees (including the knees).  Therefore if the non-Muslim females swim with any part of their bodies from the navel to the knees exposed then the Muslim females should not accompany them.  (Raddul Muhtaar, Vol. 5, Page 262, Fataawaa ‘Aalamgeeriyyah, Vol. 5, Page 327, Al-Bahrur Raaiq, Vol. 8, Page 193)

Note:  Although the ‘Aurah of a female from another female is from the navel to the knees the Fuqahaa have mentioned that a Muslim female should cover her entire body in the presence of  non-Muslim females as well as immoral and immodest Muslim females.  (Fataawaa ‘Aalamgeeriyyah, Vol. 5, Page 327)

  1. The ‘Aurah of a male from another male is also from the navel to the knees (including the knees).  Therefore one should not play soccer with such males who play while their ‘Aurah is exposed.  (Raddul Muhtaar, Vol. 5, Page 257-258, Fataawaa ‘Aalamgeeriyyah, Vol. 5, Page 327, Al-Bahrur Raaiq, Vol. 8, Page 192)
