Can a university student take Bai’at from a sheikh without parental permission?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Jamia Binoria
My question is: Can I take Bai’at from a sheikh without the permission of my parents? My mother is against taking Bai’at from anyone because people outside will come to know about issues going on in the home, and she thinks that nowadays girls should not take Bai’at because it can be a means of temptation. I am a student of university and many time I fall into situations for which I am in need of the guidance of a pious sheikh. Hence I want to take Bai’at, so that I can be steadfast on the right path.

Self-rectification is compulsory upon all Muslims. Through self-rectification, one will stay away from sins and he will be motivated to perform good deeds. Furthermore, there are many situations in life for which one is in need of the guidance and supplication of a pious person who has connection with Allah.
For this, it is recommended to take Bai’at with someone who is connected to Allah, fully implements the Shari’ah in his life and follows the traditional ways of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. Our past scholars showed great importance to this. From this, one will attain blessing of all the pious persons in which ever Silsila he is connected to, and most specifically, the special attention and supplication/prayers of the sheikh from which he took Bai’at. However, it is necessary for women to remain secluded in this matter, hence she should be in contact with a pious sheikh through her Mehram. Whereas, the approval of one’s mother is also necessary, hence the questioner should use wisdom and insight in trying to make his mother understand what was mentioned above (about the importance of Bai’at). If the questioner’s mother and other relatives prohibit him from taking Bai’at, then he should not commit the sin of disobeying one’s parents to fulfil an act that is recommended. In fact, the questioner should start Taleem of any book of Ahadith in his home. With regards to this, it would be beneficial to read Fazil-e-Amal, written by Hazraz Maulana Zakariya, and also the books of Hazrat Ashraf Ali Thanwi.
