Is celebrating giyarwaan shareef – گیارھویں شریف – bidah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Jamia Binoria

Is celebrating giyarwaan shareef – گیارھویں شریف – bidah? I have heard a hadith which suggest that you can pass sawaab to some one by doing good deed e.g. reading Qur’an, feeding some one and then saying to Allah to pass on this sawab to the dead. In giyarwaab shareef, sawab is given to Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jillani. What is the authencity of this hadith. If this is true then how come giyarwaan shareef becomes bidah? If it is bidah then is it because you can not creat more than two ocassions in lsam other than the two Eid. What if we pass sawaab to some other day of the year and not on 11th of Islamic month. Would it be OK then ?

الجواب حامدا و مصلیا

It is permissible, without doubt, to do Eesal e Sawab to any muslim whether he is a famous saint or not and this is established through Ahadees e Mubaraka but the holy Shari’a has not specified any day, time or, month etc. for it. Binding a thing, which Shari’a has left common and independent, with time etc. and performing it considering it as a source of Sawab is no doubt, falls in the fold of surplus and innovation in Deen, whether with the name of Giyarwaan or any other name. Therefore one should do Eesal e Sawab within his capacity as and when he wishes
Allah knows best.
