Ḥadīth regarding the deceased receiving charity in the grave
Question
Is the following narration of Ṭabaranī about the deceased receiving charity in the grave authentic and can it be circulated to family and friends?
‘“O occupant of the deep grave, this is a gift given to you by your family, so accept it.” Then he will enter upon him, and he will rejoice thereat and be of good cheer, and his neighbours who were not given anything will be sad.’

Answer
The narration is not authentic, one of the narrators therein has been described as a liar. Therefore, the narration should not be circulated. Instead, one should circulate authentic narrations that mention the virtue of giving charity for the reward of the deceased, which is undoubtedly one of the most effective ways of benefiting the deceased.
قال الإمام الطبراني في المعجم الأوسط (٦٥٠٤): حدثنا محمد بن داود بن أسلم الصدفي، نا عبيد الله بن عبد الله المنكدري، نا محمد بن إسماعيل بن أبي فديك قال: سمعت أبا محمد الشامي، يحدث أنه سمع أبا هريرة يذكر، أنه سمع أنس بن مالك يقول: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: ما من أهل بيت يموت منهم ميت فيتصدقون عنه بعد موته، إلا أهداها إليه جبريل عليه السلام على طبق من نور، ثم يقف على شفير القبر، فيقول: يا صاحب القبر العميق، هذه هدية أهداها إليك أهلك فاقبلها، فيدخل عليه، فيفرح بها ويستبشر، ويحزن جيرانه الذين لا يهدى إليهم بشيء. قال الطبراني: لا يروى هذا الحديث عن أنس إلا بهذا الإسناد، تفرد به ابن أبي فديك، انتهى. قال الهيثمي في مجمع الزوائد (٣/١٣٩): وفيه أبو محمد الشامي، قال عنه الأزدي: كذاب، انتهى. وقال الذهبي في الميزان (٤/٥٧٠): روى حديثا عن بعض التابعين منكرا، قال الأزدي: كذاب، انتهى۔
