Is the Ahmadiyya Sect Muslim?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by IslamicPortal.co.uk

We were told in college that the Ahmadiyya is a Muslim sect. Is this true?

It is the unanimous position of Muslim scholars worldwide that the Ahmadiyya sect and its followers, also known as the Qadianis, are not Muslims. This is primarily because the founder of this group denied the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ to be the seal of the Prophets and claimed to be a Prophet himself. This clearly contradicts the Qurʾān, the mutawātir (mass transmitted) ḥadīths of the Prophet ﷺ and the consensus of the scholars:

  1. Qurʾān – Allāh Almighty says, “Muḥammad is not the father of any of your men, but the messenger of Allah and the seal of the Prophets” (Sūrah Aḥzāb 33: 40).
  2. Mutawātir ḥadīths – Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr (d. 774/1373) writes in his exegesis of the Qurʾān (6: 428), “and mutawātir ḥadīths have transmitted this from the messenger of Allah ﷺ from the ḥadīths of a group of companions.” For example, the Prophet ﷺ said, “And I am the seal of the Prophets” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 3535; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 2286). The Prophet ﷺ said as narrated in a ṣaḥīḥ (sound) narration, “Verily there will be in my nation thirty liars who will all claim to be a Prophet, and I am the seal of the Prophets, there is no Prophet after me” (Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 2219; Sunan Abū Dāwūd, 4252; Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān, 7238; al-Mustadrak, 8390). The Prophet ﷺ also said as narrated in a ṣaḥīḥ (sound) narration, “Verily, the Messengership and Prophethood has ended, so there is no Messenger after me and no Prophet” (Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 2272; al-Mustadrak, 8178). Also refer to Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (4416; 3455; 3532), Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (523; 2404; 1842; 2354), Aḥkām al-Qurʾān of Mufti Muḥammad Shafīʿ ʿUthmānī (3: 356).
  3. Consensus – ʿAllāmah ʾĀlūsī Baghdādī writes in Rūḥ al-Maʿānī (11: 219), “and he ﷺ being the seal of the Prophets has been articulated by the Qurʾān and it is the consensual position of the Ummah. Thus, one who claims contrary to this will be deemed as a non-believer” (also see Aḥkām al-Qurʾān, 3: 356).

It is an agreed Islamic principle that a person who denies a fundamental aspect of Islām and a verse of the Qurʾān, does not remain a Muslim, although he may continue to offer his prayers throughout his life and claim to be a Muslim (Radd al-Muḥtār, 1: 561; Ikfār al-Mulḥidīn, p. 17). This sect is increasingly deceiving people across the globe by portraying themselves to be a Muslim sect and mislabelling their places of worship as mosques. It is every Muslim’s duty to warn others of this dangerous sect and ensure that they are not regarded or treated as Muslims.
