A narration stating the four harms of adultery

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Is this Hadith authentic?

إياكم والزنا، فإن فيه أربع خصال: يذهب البهاء عن الوجه، ويقطع الرزق، ويسخط الرحمن، والخلود في النار

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma).

(Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 7092)

‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has declared a narrator very weak. In fact, Imam Ibn Ma’in (rahimahullah) has declared him a liar and Imam Ibn ‘Adiy (rahimahullah) has stated that he has been accused of fabricating. ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has also declared him a liar.

(Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 6 pg. 254/255, Lisanul Mizan, vol. 6 pg. 196-197, number: 5788, Talkhisu Kitabil Mawdu’at, Hadith, 783)

The narration should therefore not be quoted.

Translation

Abstain from zina for it has four [evil] qualities; It removes the radiance of the face, it cuts off sustenance, angers the Most Merciful [Allah Ta’ala], and a person will be in the Fire for eternity.
