The Kursi in relation to the ‘Arsh

Question

Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) said: “The Kursi is the place of the feet of Allah, and the size of Throne cannot be known.”

This was narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah in at-Tawhid, 1/248, no. 154 and Hakim in Mustadrak. He classed it as authentic according to the conditions of Bukhari and Muslim and Dhahabi has agreed with him.

Is the statement of Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) sourced from an Israeli description [Israiliyyat]?

Answer

This narration is authentically reported as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) as you have cited above.

(Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 3 pg. 282)

It is possible that this was sourced from a Historical source. It seems that ‘Allamah ‘Ayni (rahimahullah) was of the view that Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) got this narration from Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

(‘Umdatul Qari, Hadith:  4535)

Nevertheless, the narration should be quoted as authentically reported, i.e. As the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma).

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
