Deprived due to doubting someone’s sincerity

Please mention the reference of this narration:

قال مكحول رأيت رجلا يصلي وكلما ركع وسجد بكى فاتهمته أنه يرائي ببكائه فحرمت البكاء سنة

Answer

Imams Abu Bakr ibn Abid Dunya and Abu Nu’aym (rahimahumallah) have recorded this narration.

(Al ‘Uqubat: 83, with slight variation in the wording and Hilyatul Awliya, vol. 5 pg. 184)

Translation

Makhul (rahimahullah) said: “I saw a man offering Salah and each time he made ruku’ and sajdah he wept. I suspected/accused him of weeping as he wanted to show off. Due to this, I was deprived of crying for an entire year!”

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
