A du’a asking Allah to wash away sins

Kindly provide a reference for the following Masnun du’a:

“O Allah, wash off my sins with the [melted] water of ice and snow, and purify my heart of sins, just as white clothes are cleansed of filth.”

Answer:

Imam Nasai (rahimahullah) has recorded the following Hadith on the authority of Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) who says:

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would say, ‘Allahummaghsil khatayaya bi ma-ith thalji wal baradi wa naqqi qalbi minal khataya kama naqqaytath thawbal abyada minad danas

(Sunan Nasai, Al Mujtaba, Hadith: 333)

The Arabic text of the du’a is as follows:

اللَّهُمَّ اغْسِلْ خَطَايَاىَ بِمَاءِ الثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَنَقِّ قَلْبِي مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ

Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah) have also recorded this du’a in a lengthier narration which comprises of other du’as as well.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 6368 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2705)

Note

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) had also recited a similar du’a in Janazah Salah as recorded by Imam Muslim (rahimahullah).

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 963)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
