Writing the salutations upon Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is it okay to quote the following Hadith?

Writing the salutations:

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال قال رسول الله : من صلى علي في كتاب لم تزل الملائكة تستغفر له ما دام اسمي في ذلك الكتاب

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radhiallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:

Whoever sends salutations upon me in written form, the angels continue seeking forgiveness on his behalf as long as my name remains on that piece of paper.

Answer

‘Allamah Suyuti (rahimahullah) has stated that one could quote this narration for encouragement despite its weakness.

(Tadribur Rawi, vol.2 pg.19)

However, the popular view among the Muhaddithun is that this is actually the statement of Sayyiduna Ja’far As-Sadiq (rahimahullah) and should rather be attributed to him.

(At-Targhib wat Tarhib, vol. 1 pg.111, Jila-ul Afham, pg.56. Also see: Al-Qawlul Badi’, pg.484 )

The writer concurs with this view.
