Explanation of part of a du’a

What is the explanation of the following part of the du’a:

واجعله الوارث منا

Answer

This is part of a longer du’a recorded by Imam Tirmidhi and other Muhaddithun.

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3502)

Before the words in question, Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) made du’a for the faculty of hearing, sight and physical strength and then asked for them to remain [healthy] until death. Therefore in this case the translation of the words in question would be:

“[O Allah!] Make these faculties remain [healthy] until I pass away”

The commentators have also offered the following explanation: “Make it such/Allow our inheritors/heirs to be our direct progeny”

(Refer: Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 1505, Lama’atut Tanqih, Hadith: 2492, Tuhfatul Ahwadhi, Hadith: 3502)

Al Mubarakfuri, the commentator of Sunan Tirmidhi has preferred the first explanation.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
