Clarification on the link of a Hadith to the chapter in Sahih Muslim

Answered according to Hanafi Fiqh by

In Sahih Muslim, what is the link of the following Hadith to the chapter ‘باب نسخ الوضوء مما مست النار’:

أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم شرب لبنا ثم دعا بماء فتمضمض وقال إن له دسما

The narration in question is as follows:

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) drank milk and and then [called for water] and rinsed his mouth, saying, “It has fat in it.”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 211 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 358. See here)

It is possible that since milk contains fatty residue just like meat [which is cooked on fire], therefore the Hadith in question was cited with the other Hadiths on the topic mentioned in your question.

(Refer: Fathul Bari, Hadith: 211 and Al Bahrul Muhituth Thajjaj, vol. 8 pg. 343)

Note: The chapters in Sahih Muslim were added by commentators and not by Imam Muslim. See here.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
