Reference for the du’a to recite when it rains

Can you provide the reference of the famous du’a to recite during rain?

Allahumma sayyiban nafi’a

Answer

It is reported from Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) that when Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) saw rain, he would say, ‘O Allah! Make this beneficial rain’

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1032)

The Arabic text of the du’a:

اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

Another version

Imam Ibn Majah, Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, Imam Nasai and other Muhaddithun (rahimahumullah) have recorded this du’a with the following words.

اللهُمَّ سَيْبًا نَافِعًا

Allahumma sayban nafi’a (with a س)

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 3889, Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 29833 and As Sunanul Kubra, Hadith: 1842)

Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah (hafizahullah) has graded the Hadith authentic (sahih).

(Annotations on Musannaf, Hadith: 29833)

Note: The translation for this version will be:

O Allah, let it be a beneficial downpour.

One may recite any of these versions.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
