Explanation of the Hadith: ‘Akh-khiru hunna..

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

What is the explanation of the following Hadith:

‘Akhriju hunna min haythu akhraja hunnallah’

Answer

These words are recorded as the statement of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu’anhu).

(Musannaf ‘Abdur Razzaq, Hadith: 5115, Al-Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 9484-9485. Also see Nasbur Rayah, Hadith: 2023, Fathul Bari, before Hadith: 294, Al-Maqasidul Hasanah, Hadith: 41 & Kashful Khafa, Hadith: 156)

The words in the above sources are:

Akh-khiru hunna – أَخِّروهُنَّ من حيث أخرهن الله

-The words you have quoted appear in some editions of Majma’uz Zawaid, and is probably a misprint.

Meaning

This is usually used in the issue of the salah of women; (1) them not being suitable as Imams, and (2) their position being behind men in the saffs (rows)

(Al-Hidayah)

(3) It is also possible that Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu’anhu) said this to encourage the women to offer their salah at home, since he was particular on discouraging them from the Masjid.

(See: Atharus Sunan, Hadith: 307-309)
