Modesty; Islam’s distinct feature

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

What is the reference for the narration which states the distinguishing characteristic of Islam is modesty?

Answer

Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) is reported to have said:

‘Indeed every religion has a special feature, and Islam’s distinct feature is modesty.’

This Hadith is reliable and is reported by several Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum).

Among them are:

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu’anhuma) in Sunan Ibn Majah, (Hadith: 4182), Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu’anhu) in Sunan Ibn Majah, (Hadith 4181) and Musnad ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdil ‘Aziz of Imam Baghandy (rahimahullah), (Hadith: 92).

See footnotes of my Esteemed Shaykh, Al-Muhaddith Muhammad ‘Awwamah (may Allah protect him) on  Musnad ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdil ‘Aziz, (Hadith: 92) for details on the narrations of the other Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum) and comments on its authenticity.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
