Meaning of a Hadith regarding Sayyiduna ‘Ammar (radiyallahu’anhu)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

What is the meaning of the Hadith in which  Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said regarding Hazrat Ammar bin Yasir (radiyallahu ‘anhu):

Taqtuluhul Fiatul Baaghiyah?

Answer

Translation:

‘Ammar will be killed by the renegading group.

Commentary

Sayyiduna ‘Ammar (radiyallahu’anhu) was martyred while fighting on the side of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu’anhu) – who was the Khalifah at that time.

The people who martyred him were actually opposing the Khalifah; Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu’anhu) and are therefore termed as the ‘renegading group’

However, since there existed Sahabah in this ‘group’, the ‘Ulama have explained that these Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum) were actually Mujtahids, who erred and therefore they will not be sinful.

In other words, although they were termed as the renegading group, they will not be liable for the sin that renegades are usually liable for.

Refer: Fathul Bari, Hadith: 447.

For our own good, we are advised to refrain from delving deep into the differences that occurred among Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum) as we are not answerable to Allah Ta’ala for those events.

On the contrary, we are indeed liable if we inadvertently speak or even think ill of the Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum).

May Allah Ta’ala protect us from fitnah.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
