The number of children of Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu’anhu)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

How many children did Sayyidina Anas (radiyallahu’anhu) have. Was it one hundred and twenty (120)?

Does this include grandchildren? JazakAllahu khayran for all the assistance. Appreciated.

Answer

Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu’anhu) is reported to have said:

‘Up to the time when Hajjaj came [to Basrah- in the year 75 A.H.] I had buried 123/125/129 of my children.’

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1982, Dalailun Nubuwwah of Bayhaqi, vol.7 pg.194-196)

This number excludes his grandchildren.

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 1982)

In Sahih Muslim, Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu’anhu) said:

‘…and my children, and their children add up to more than a hundred today.’

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 6326)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has written that this was the number of those who did not die by then.

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 1982)

Note: The above is considered one of the manifestations of the Prophethood of Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam), since Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) had made du’a that Allah Ta’ala blesses Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu’anhu) with abundant offspring.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
