When serving, to cover the pot for barakah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Its commonly said when serving food to cover a portion of the pot with the lid for barakah. Is this correct?

Answer

This is deduced from a lengthy Hadith in Sahih Bukhari in which Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) had fed the entire Muslim army with food that was prepared for a few people only. While serving the food, Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) would dish out a few spoons and then keep the pot covered with its lid.

(Sahih Bukhari, hadith: 4101)

This was a miracle on the hands of Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam).

The miracles of Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) can never be matched, but what we could do is follow what he did to the best of our ability, with the hope of attaining some barakah in the food like was attained in this incident.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
