Salah, a light [Nur] for the Believer

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is the following a Hadith:

الصَّلاةُ نُورُ الْمُؤْمِنِ

Translation

Salah is the light of the Believer

Answer

Imam Ibn Majah and Imam Abu Ya’la (rahimahullah) have recorded this narration on the authority of Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (radiyallahu ‘anhu) with a very weak chain.

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 4210 and Musnad Abu Ya’la, Hadith: 3655 and 3656)

The following words, recorded by Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) should be quoted instead,

Sayyiduna Abu Malik Al Ash’ari (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“…And Salah is a light…”[although understood to mean Salah is a light for a Believer, this authentic version does not have the words ‘For a Believer‘]…”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 223)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
