Sunnah dress

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by FatwaCentre.org
Question

Assalamu ‘Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh
I would like to know regarding the Islamic understanding of “Sunnah dress”. Some argue that wearing Shalwar Kamees, ‘Abaya, Topi etc. is not Sunnah but culture.
They say the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم dressed according to the custom of his people, so therefore we may dress according to the custom of our people (provided it fulfills the requirements of Shari’a like covering ‘Awrah). Would it then be considered “Sunnah” to dress according to the custom? For example, one may argue that it was the custom of the Arabs to wear Topi, turban, etc. and the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم dressed according to the custom of his land and therefore wearing turban etc. is culture, not sunnah.

Also, would it be considered Sunnah to wear a Shawl because the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم wore a shawl? And if this is the case then how should the Shawl be?

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Inspirer of truth

Before going into the details of the Prophet’s dress code (may Allah bless him and give him peace), it is important to understand that different schools of jurisprudence have their own methodology through which they work. As a result of this, they will have their own classification and categorisation of rulings which will be unique to that school. Hence, in order to understand how a particular school views an issue, it would be necessary to analyse the works of the school in question. For example, as Hanafis, we would need to analyse the legal theories (‘usul) and derived rulings (furu῾) of the Hanafi scholars. This would allow us to then apply a ruling which is in accordance to the Hanafi school. The opinion presented below will be based on the Hanafi school as that is the school which we follow.

In the Hanafi school, sunnats are of two categories:

  • Sunan al-Huda (also known as sunan al-῾ibadah)
  • Sunan al-Zawa’id (also known as sunan al-῾adiyah).

The first category refers to those acts which the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) legislated. Practising them was part of the religion and not imitating the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) in this regard could be considered sinful and misguidance. The second are the habits of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace). These are acts which were not done by the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) in his capacity as a Prophet in order to deliver religious legislation, rather they were personal habits and preferences of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace).

The Hanafi jurists clearly state that the manner in which the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) dressed falls into the second category, the habits of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace). This is found in numerous works such as that of Imam Tahtawi and Ibn ῾Abidin amongst others.[1]

The question then remains as to what the ruling is for this category. Does an act which falls within sunan al-zawa’id lose its importance with the change of time and circumstance or is it still better for a Muslim to try and implement this to the best of their ability. We know that not practising this type of sunnah is not disliked or detested as is clearly stated by the Hanafi jurists. However, what is the ruling of practising it. The likes of Imam Tahtawi mention that it is optimal (‘awla) to practise the sunan al-zawa’id.[2] This means that it is best to imitate the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace), even in his personal habits, such as the way he dressed, ate etc.

This is also supported by the practice of some of the companions of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace). There are many reports of companions imitating the way of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) even in those things which were not religious acts. One companion who was well known for imitating the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) as closely as possible was Abdullah Ibn ῾Umar who would even go to the extent of stopping his camel and praying in those places where the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) would stop his camel and pray his salat. In one narration, when he became aware that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace)  had stopped under a certain tree he started looking after that tree, to prevent if from drying out and dying.[3] There are reports which indicate that he would also try and pray in the Ka῾bah exactly where the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) prayed and he would stop and reside in ῾Arafat exactly where the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) did. These acts were not legislative acts of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) but were personal preferences. On one occasion Abdullah Ibn ῾Umar was asked why he practised four things which other companions would not do, including wearing a particular type of footwear. In response to this he stated that he saw the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) wearing such footwear and he wished to do the same.[4]

Similarly, there are narrations of other companions also wanting to imitate the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) in those things which were not necessarily religious acts. These companions desired to imitate the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) in every possible way, and this was a sign of their immense love for the Messenger (may Allah bless him and give him peace). The above narrations of Abdullah Ibn ῾Umar should suffice.

As for the dress code of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace), we know that he would prefer to wear long and lose garments especially one known as the qamis.[5] Modern day jubbas or kurtas, are evidently more in line with the Prophet’s dress (may Allah bless him and give him peace) than trousers and shirts are.[6] The argument here is not that it is a religiously binding sunnah to wear a jubba, nor that one will be sinful for not wearing it, rather, it is that within the Hanafi school it is optimal to wear that which the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) would have preferred to wear, and that Insha Allah, one will also be rewarded for doing so.

Based on the above we believe that according to the Hanafi school it is better for one to dress in a manner which closely resembles the manner in which the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) dressed, even if they are living in the West, and doing so would not fall under the prohibition of libas al-shuhrah. However, if an individual chose not to wear the jubbah they would not be sinful as long as the rules of shariah are not compromised. Those who state that it is not from the sunan al-zawaid or that it is not preferred to wear a jubbah may do so due to their categorisation of sunnah differing form that of the Hanafi school.

In addition to this, we would add that in the West, there is no particular way of dressing. Rather, people from different backgrounds dress according to their own culture and habits and this is seen as acceptable in society. We should not shy away from wearing clothing that is associated to Muslims. Yes, if there is fear that one may be harmed for wearing such clothing then they may dress in a manner which will not make them stand out as wearing a jubbah is not an obligation.

As for wearing a shawl or scarf over the shoulders we have not come across this being practiced by the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace). We do find narrations where he would cover his head with a scarf or similar garment, and narrations where an outer garment was worn over the clothing but not a scarf over the shoulders.
