Is cash/gold received ON the zakat calculation date included in the calculation?

Question

Asalamoalaikum,
If my zakat calculation date is on the 1st of Ramadan. And on the 1st of Ramadan, someone gives me cash, or gold, or I get paid my salary on the date (say it gets deposited into my account in the afternoon of 1st of Ramadan), will I need to include this amount of cash/gold in my Zakat Calculation ?

Or do I only include only that cash/gold/silver which I own on the day BEFORE my calculation date in my calculation (what I own before maghrib of previous day enters).

Please guide me.


Answer

Zakat is payable at the end of a full lunar year. Hence, if the first time you possessed nisab was on the first day of Ramadan then your lunar year will start from the first of Ramadan until the last day of sha’ban. The last day of sha’ban will be the day of calculating your zakatable assets. If any zakatable assets were received on this day, they will be included in your zakat calculation as this will be income received ‘during the lunar year’. Any income received on the first of Ramadan will count towards the following zakat year.

وَأَمَّا كَوْنُهُ حَوْلِيًّا أَيْ تَمَّ عَلَيْهِ حَوْلٌ فَلِقَوْلِهِ – عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ – «لَا زَكَاةَ فِي مَالٍ حَتَّى يَحُولَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ»؛ وَلِأَنَّ السَّبَبَ هُوَ الْمَالُ النَّامِي لِكَوْنِ الْوَاجِبِ جُزْءٍ مِنْ الْفَضْلِ لَا مِنْ رَأْسِ الْمَالِ لِقَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى {وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ مَاذَا يُنْفِقُونَ قُلِ الْعَفْوَ} [البقرة: 219] أَيْ الْفَضْلَ، وَالنُّمُوُّ إنَّمَا يَتَحَقَّقُ فِي الْحَوْلِ غَالِبًا أَمَّا الْمَوَاشِي فَظَاهِرٌ، وَكَذَا أَمْوَالُ التِّجَارَةِ لِاخْتِلَافِ الْأَسْعَارِ فِيهِ غَالِبًا عِنْدَ اخْتِلَافِ الْفُصُولِ فَأُقِيمَ السَّبَبُ الظَّاهِرُ، وَهُوَ الْحَوْلُ مَقَامَ الْمُسَبَّبِ، وَهُوَ النُّمُوُّ
