Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

Assalamu alaykum.Sheikh,i’m a male who lived in the west.In absense of water,i want to know if it is permissible to wipe the front exit(male) with 3 different part of a single wall,or 3 different part of a pole or different part of a twig for purification?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

In the absence of water, one may resort to the usage of toilet paper, stones, dried clay, or anything which is considered pure in itself and has the ability to purify and absorb.

Anything that is rough, coarse, and will cause damage and harm to the private organ should not be used for purification in this regard.

A wall, which is not rough and coarse, but is made of baked bricks is permissible, though disliked and reprehensible.

A twig, which is not rough, coarse, and harmful is permissible.

A pole, generally made from metal, should not be used, since it does not have the quality of absorption.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best

Wassalaam,

Ismail Moosa (Mufti)
