Do indecent images in mind break wudu or prayer

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

After hearing that having bad seeing bad images (sexual or just indecent) in your mind breaks prayer, I often get these thoughts or I find myself wanting to bring the thought up and then struggle to keep my mind straight.

It’s usually not see related, it’s mainly imagining a body part, whether it’s myself or completely random. It started properly after I thought it would break my namaz.

Is this true, does this break my prayer or wudu?
Could I also have the answer in the case where it is intentional since I worry that, that will bother me next?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

It is not permissible for a person to intentionally fantasize, or entertain any sexual images in their minds. The sin is further aggravated if one entertains these images whilst in prayer. If Shaytaan tries to bring these images to you, you should immediately bring your mind back and concentrate whilst praying.

However, in spite of it being impermissible and sinful, if there is no discharge from your private organ, the Wudhu and Salah will be intact. If there is a discharge,  the Wudhu and Salah will be nullified, and you will have to purify your garments.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best

Wassalaam,

Ismail Moosa (Mufti)
