Question:
As salaamu `alaykum, my little brother plays survival videogames. Sometimes, he needs has to eat to survive by killing and eating chicken, etc, but as you know, there’s no game with a halal dhabiha. Should I make him stop playing because of this meat eating? (Considering that the rest of the game is permissible.)

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Your question pertains to a videogame in which survival tactics are simulated. Among those is the act of killing and eating chicken. The meat of permissible animals, except for fish and locusts, only becomes ḥalāl for Muslims through a specific process of slaughtering, which requires reciting the name of Allah ta`āla at the time of individual slaughtering and the cutting of most of the major passageways in the neck, namely the trachea, esophagus, and two blood vessels.[i] This refers to meat that is consumed which is not the case in this scenario.
While many videogames are a waste of time, survival games may provide beneficial skills or ideas for certain situations. Although those situations are likely rare for most, playing them with the intent of benefit is permissible. [ii]
However, these skills are better learned in real life where muscle memory, experience, and physical fitness are more beneficial. Videogames are detrimental in this manner and further lead to decreases in attention span, memory, and fitness.
Additionally, they often contain elements of music and images of living creatures, both of which are forbidden in our Sharī`ah.[iii]
We encourage you to take your brother outdoors to learn survival skills. Many organizations also exist to facilitate this. In shā Allāh, he will find an enjoyment outdoors that can not be matched with what is found on the screen.

أن اللهو على أنواع : هو مجرد ، ولهو فيه نفع وفائدة ولكن ورد الشرع بالنهي عنه ، ولهو فيه فائدة ولم يرد في الشرع نهي صريح عنه ، ولكنه ثبت بالتجربة أنه يكون ضرره أعظم من نفعه ملتحق بالمنهي عنه ، ولهو فيه فائدة ولم يرد الشرع بتحريمه، ولم يغلب على نفعه ضرره ، ولكن يشتغل فيه بقصد التلهي ، ولهو فيه فائدة مقصودة ولم يرد الشرع بتحريمه وليس فيه مفسدة دينية واشتغل به على غرض صحيح لتحصيل الفائدة المطلوبة لا بقصد التلهی. فهذه خمسة أنواع لا جائز فيها إلا الأخير الخامس، فهو أيضا ليس من إباحة اللهو في شي بل إباحة ما كان لهوا صورة ثم خرج عن اللهوية بقصد صالح وغرض صحيح فلم يبق لهوا .
