Can a woman make wudhu while wearing the “breathable water based” nail polish?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Dear Mufti,

Can a woman make wudhu while wearing the “breathable water based” nail polish? I don’t know if this is different from the normal water based nail polish?

Assalaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah,

الجواب و بالله التوفيق

Tests conducted on this type of nail polish reveal that water penetrates the nail polish and reaches to the nail. However, it is seen that it is water vapour/moisture that reaches the nail and not water in the liquid form.

The law of wudhu, as given in the Holy Quran, requires that the parts of the body including the nails must be washed. That is, the nails must be actually washed with water to the extent that water trickles after washing. Seeing that this does not take place in this type of nail polish, it means that one cannot perform wudhu while wearing this. It must be removed while performing wudhu.

And Allah Knows Best.

Mufti Waseem Khan.
