Lighting Fireworks on Eid

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DaruliftaaZambia.com

Question

Salams is fireworks allowed in Islam?

Just on any occasion for ex. Eid or because of a new year.

Or just on any normal day for fun.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Almighty Allah says in the Holy Quran,

Translation: “And do not be wasteful/extravagant. Indeed, (Allah) does not like those who waste.”

Translation: “Indeed, the wasteful/transgressors are inhabitants of the fire.”

Translation: And give the relative his right, and (also) the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully.”

Translation: “And do not overspend excessively, Indeed the wasteful are brethren/friends of the shayateen. Indeed, shaytaan was extremely ungrateful to his lord.”

Wealth is a great bounty of Almighty Allah. As evidenced by the verses above, squandering one’s wealth in needless pursuits is not permissible in Islam.

Fireworks may be used for SOS distress signals. If purchased for this purpose, it will be permissible.

However, if fireworks are purchased for entertainment, then they provide no benefit, neither in this world nor in the hereafter. Ones hard-earned money, that could have otherwise been utilized in some fruitful venture, is instead wasted and lost simply for a few minutes of display. This is reckless use of a bounty and is tantamount to ingratitude to the favors of Almighty Allah.

Furthermore, setting off fireworks during New Years etc. has become a salient feature of the non-Muslims. Annually, millions, nay, billions of dollars are spent on fireworks by countries all over the world. Imagine how many lives could have been improved had this wealth been put to good use.

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said,

Translation: “Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, whoever imitates a nation/people, is from them.” (Abu Dawud-4031)

The concept of celebration with fireworks is one that stems from non-Muslim practices. As such, it will not be permissible to celebrate Eid by lighting fireworks.

As for lighting fireworks just for fun, due to the squandering of wealth involved, one should abstain from it.[1]
