Is this extra money interest?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DaruliftaaZambia.com

Question

A relative in the uk asks me to to perform a sadka of slaughtering a goat on her behalf,I perform it and it’s costs me K200. The relative pays me a standard amount of £20 or $25. It’s always been such that the exchange rate value of the foreign currency paid to me is and has always been more than K200. No discussions regarding exchange rates has occurred. Is the so called extra money profit or interest.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, interest is a surplus that is not in lieu of a valid commodity and is stipulated within the transaction.[1]

Accordingly, provided your relative is aware that slaughtering a goat costs you K200, any surplus he grants you will be a gift from his side and permissible for you.[2]

However, if your relative is not aware of the difference between $25/£20 and K200, it is your duty to inform him. If he is content with it, the surplus will be permissible for you. If he demands the surplus, it must be returned to him.
