Can a daughter scrub her mothers back

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

If a woman finds it hard to scrub her back whilst showering/having a bath, is it allowed for that woman’s daughter or daughter in law to scrub her back for her? The woman does not have a broken arm or back, she says it is because she cannot stretch her arms enough to reach her back. How much satr does a woman have to do from her daughter in law?

Answer:

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

The area which a Muslim woman has to cover in front of fellow Muslim women is the area from the navel up to and including the knees. (Hidayah p.461 v.4)

A Muslim woman has to keep the aforementioned area covered at all times in front of fellow Muslim women. Keeping this in mind it will be permissible for a daughter or a daughter in law to scrub the back of her mother or mother in law as long as the area from the navel up to and including the knees are covered.
