Made a vow to give all the money to a madrassah but know I am in need of it

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Made a vow to give all the money to a madrasah but know I am in need of it.

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

With regards to your question, it will be necessary for you to fulfil this vow. However, as you are in need of the money at the present time you are not required to give the £1,000 straight away. Gradually, over a period of time donate a little towards the madrasah until you finish paying off the amount which you had made a vow off.

Finally, the money your father gave to give to some people which you have not given yet, it will be necessary to fulfil this request. This is a promise and it is necessary for all Muslims to fulfil promises and covenants.

Saaiduna Abdullah Bin Amr Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said: “There are four (characteristics), whoever has them is a hypocrite, and whoever has one of the four has a characteristic of hypocrisy unless he gives it up: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise he breaks it; what he makes a pledge he betrays it; and when he disputes he resorts to foul language.” (Sahih Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)
