Would Searching for Divorce Rulings on Google Establish a Divorce?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Answered by: Maulana Nazrul Islam

Question:

A person thought of finding some rulings on divorce on the internet. He intended to type ” divorce and its rulings” but as soon as he wrote “di” in google he had this weird fear of writing this word and he stopped and deleted the words “di”. Then he thought to himself that he is just finding the rulings on Google. So he again wrote “divorce and its rulings” and found out the relevant questions and answers. Does such a scenario constitute any divorce?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

By seeking knowledge about divorce, or a teacher saying and writing divorce will not constitute a divorce.

However, if a person intends divorce to his wife while writing it, the Talaq takes place. (1)
