Permissible times of lying

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Permissible times of lying

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

Lying is permissible in three instances:

  1. In war
  2. Reconciling between two disputing parties
  3. Husband lying to wife or vice versa to create love and harmony

Saaidah Umm Kulthum Bint Uqbah Radiallahu Anha narrates that she heard the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam say “He is not a liar who reconciles between two people and narrates something good or says something good”.  (Sahih Bukhari p.371 v.1)

Saaidah Asma Bint Yazeed Radiallahu Anha narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said “It is not permissible to tell lies except in three cases: When a man speaks to his wife in a way to please her; lying in war; and lying in order to reconcile between people”.  (Sunan Tirmizi)
