Asking too many questions

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Asking too many questions

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

In Islam asking questions is something which is encouraged. It is mentioned in the Holy Qur’an that the Angels asked Allah (SWA) questions:

“And when your lord said to the Angels; “I am about to place a viceroy in the Earth, the (Angels) said; “Will you place therein one who will do harm therein and will shed blood, while we hymn your praise and sanctify you? Allah said; surely I know that which you do not know.” (Surah Baqarah v.30)

Furthermore, it is mentioned in the Holy Qur’an of the incident of Saaiduna Ibrahim Alayhis Salam asking Allah (SWA) to show him how he gives life to the dead. (Surah Baqarah v.260)

Also the importance of forwarding questions to the scholars and to those who have knowledge is mentioned in the Holy Qur’an where Allah (SWA) says;

“Ask the people of knowledge if you do not know.” (Surah Anbiya v.7)

However to ask unnecessary questions is prohibited in Islam.

Allah (SWA) in the Holy Quran has said; “O those who believe, do not ask about things which, if disclosed, may displease you; and if you ask about them when the Quran is being revealed, they will be disclosed to you.” (Surah Maaidah v.101)

The cause of revelation for this verse can be found in Sahih Muslim where Saaiduna Al Aqra Ibn Habis Radiallahu Anhu asked the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam; “Have we been obligated with Hajj every year? The Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam did not answer that question. He asked again. The Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam remained silent, when he asked a third time, the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam; reprimanded him by saying, if in answer to your question, I had said, “Yes” the Hajj is obligatory every year- so it would have become difficult and you would have been unable to do it.” (Maariful Quran p.266 v.3)
