Working as a Software Engineer

Answered by: Maulana Muhammad Asadullah Anwar Adam

Question:

Salam. My question is with respect to the places which are permissible to work at. My husband is a software engineer working in California and he is trying to switch his job lately and applying to places like Google, Facebook, Amazon. He is the sole bread earner in the family and supports his parents too. These are some places which pay you well. The dilemma which I was encountering particularly was with regards to the permissibility of working at these places. Websites like Google can sometimes earn from ads that may be vulgar, on the other hand, Facebook is a platform that is associated with a lot of vices like intergender mingling and has also started Facebook Dating lately. In the other words, a lot of software companies are means to impermissible acts. On the other hand, him being a software engineer limits his scope. Please give your advice on the issue. Is earning from these places considered rizq e halal?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

The income earned by working as a software engineer for Google, Amazon, etc is permissible provided he is not hired to make something that can only be used in an impermissible way due to the Islamic principle that something which may be used for lawful purposes, is permissible to sell.[1]
