Question

Assalaam Alaikum. What can a person do with leftover roti, I used to feed the swans in the park but now you can’t feed them.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

Saaiduna Anas Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said, “If the food that you are eating falls, pick it up and clean it. Then eat it and not leave it for the satan.” (Sunan Abu Dawud p.181 v.2)

Imam Nawawi (RA) has said that if food falls onto the floor one should wash it and then consume it. Otherwise, one should give it to animals to consume. (Duruus Tirmidhi p.69 v.1)

What we can derive from above is that leftover food should not be wasted by throwing it into the bin, but, instead it should be saved for the next time or given to the needy or animals. In your situation, leave the food for next time or give the food to your neighbors.

Saaiduna Abu Dharr Radiallahu Anhu reports that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam commanded me, “O Abu Dharr! Whenever you prepare a broth, put plenty of water in it, and give some of it to your neighbours”. (Sahih Muslim)
