Does Swallowing the Saliva of One’s Wife Break the Fast?

Question

Does swallowing saliva of one’s wife (by French kissing her), break the fast?

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

According to the Ḥanafī madhhab, if someone kisses his wife in such a way that the exchange of saliva occurs, the fast is broken. The fast would need to be made up, and a penalty (kaffārah) would have to be paid. If the exchange of saliva does not occur, then the fast would not be nullified (Ḥāshiyatu al-Ṭaḥṭāwī ʻalā Marāqī al-Falāḥ, 1/667).
