Question

Is a gaming centre permissible as a business?

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

A gaming centre is a business where players play multiplayer games on consoles or a computer. The business’s revenue is generated from the time the players spend in the business playing video games. We have been commanded to do business with those things that are pure and permissible.

Video games generally come under one of three categories. The first one is a game that has nudity or immoral haram content. These types of games are impermissible to play. The second category is games that don’t have any immoral haram content but don’t benefit the individual either. These types of games are permissible as long as the individual is not addicted to it, nor does it take over the individual’s life or makes them miss their prayers. The last type of games is those that don’t have any immoral haram content and benefit the individual by sharpening memory or recalling skills. These types of games are permissible without any despicability.

Keeping these points in mind, it would be best to avoid doing business as a gaming centre due to the possibility of the source of revenue coming from haram means. This is due to the nature of video games and also due to the fact that video games are considered as useless and playthings. For these reasons, it would be best to avoid a gaming centre as a business.[1]

قال: ويكره اللعب بالشطرنج والنرد والأربعة عشر وكل لهو؛ لأنه إن قامر بها فالميسر حرام بالنص وهو اسم لكل قمار، وإن لم يقامر فهو عبث ولهو. وقال عليه الصلاة والسلام: لهو المؤمن باطل إلا الثلاث: تأديبه لفرسه، ومناضلته عن قوسه، وملاعبته مع أهله وقال بعض الناس: يباح اللعب بالشطرنج لما فيه من تشحيذ الخواطر وتذكية الأفهام، وهو محكي عن الشافعي رحمه الله. لنا قوله عليه الصلاة والسلام: من لعب بالشطرنج والنردشير فكأنما غمس يده في دم الخنزير ولأنه نوع لعب يصد عن ذكر الله وعن الجمع والجماعات فيكون حراما لقوله عليه الصلاة والسلام: ما ألهاك عن ذكر الله فهو ميسر ثم إن قامر به تسقط عدالته، وإن لم يقامر لا تسقط؛ لأنه متأول فيه. وكره أبو يوسف ومحمد التسليم عليهم تحذيرا لهم، ولم ير أبو حنيفة رحمه الله به بأسا ليشغلهم عما هم فيه.
