It was the practice of the holy Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) that he used to apply kohl (surma) three times in each eye before going to sleep. So, we should follow this sunnah.
ان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كانت له محكلة يكتحل منها عند النوم ثلثا في كل عين (شمائل ترمذى).
