Medication And Tawakkul

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta Azaadville

Question:

Please advise how to draw the line between adopting means and relying on Allah only and not taking means.

Example a person falls ill, will it be contrary to tawwakul if he/she takes western medication such as antibiotics?

If a person has a chronic condition or any illness, and if advised by a Dr to take medication, is it incorrect to take a form of medication and rather they should take black seed, honey and read all the du’aas?

How does one not fall on either extremes?

Answer:

First and foremost, it is essential that we place our full trust and reliance in Allah . Allah  is the subjugator of the movements and functionalities of every single creation. Simultaneously, Allah has given the creation some traits that can be attributed to it to the extent of the Decree of Allah . Nothing happens without the Will and Decree of Allah .

Allah does with means and without means. Nevertheless, the general system of Allahin this world is to do with means. Allah created this world as Daarul-Asbaab (a world in which means are used). It is for this reason, if a person wants to eat fruit, he will have to go to a tree and pluck it from the tree, simply because Allah created the tree as a means of producing fruit. If he wants milk to drink, he will have to have it milked from a cow etc. because Allah created the cow as a means of producing milk. Similarly, in order to get a child, a person has to get married. If someone were to say: I shall not eat fruit from the tree, I shall not drink milk from the cow and I shall not get married, rather I shall wait to eat a fruit without it being grown on a tree, drink milk without it being produced by a cow and get a child without getting married, then such a person would be regarded as insane. Likewise, a person does not sit in his house or in the Masjid seeking charity and waiting for provision to come to him, rather he strives hard and works to earn Halaal provision.

Allah mentions in the Holy Quraan (62/10)

Translation; when the Salaah has been completed then disperse in the land, seek from Allah’s Bounty and remember Allah
abundantly so that you may be successful.

Similarly, seeking medical treatment and taking medication is not at variance with reliance in Allah . In fact, one may adopt such means for treatment wherever it does not contravene the Laws of Shari’ah, as this is what we are taught through the Holy Quraan and Ahadeeth of Rasulullah .

Allah mentions in the Holy Quraan (8/60)

Translation; prepare (to use in battle) against them whatever forces of strength you can muster (collect), as well as trained horses with which you may strike fear into Allah’s enemies……….

The instruction of ‘prepare (to use in battle) against them whatever forces of strength you can’ implies that it is necessary to use whatever means (weapons, etc) are available.

The following narration is recorded in (Saheeh Ibni Hibbaan-731)

Translation; One of the companions of the Messenger said, “Oh Messenger of Allah ! I release my camel into the desert and then I put my trust in Allah ,” the Messenger said, “Tie your camel, and then put your trust in Allah …”

(Sunan al-Tirmidhī -2517)

Translation; Hadhrat Anas ibn Malik Radhiyallahu-Anhu reported: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah , should I tie my she-camel and trust in Allah, or should I leave her untied and trust in Allah?” The Messenger , said, “Tie her and trust in Allah.

The following Hadeeth is recorded by Imaam Abu Dawood

(3874- Sunan Abi Dawud)

Translation; Abu Darda (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reported that Rasulaah said, ‘Allah has sent down both the disease and the cure, and He has appointed a cure for every disease, so treat yourselves medically, but do not use Haraam medication’.

As can be seen, the usage of means (including medication) is permissible and does not go against the concept of Tawakkul. One may take medicine bearing in mind that the medicine is not independent in providing cure. Only if and when Allah inserts a cure in that medication, then only will the effect of curing be found in it.

From the texts of the ‘Ulama we understand that there are different levels of Tawakkul:

1)    Tawakkul in matters which are definite and completely certain—for example, food and drink (as a means) alleviates one’s hunger and quenches one’s thirst respectively. Utilizing these means are Fardh and if abstinence leads to one’s death then abstinence will be Haram.

2)    Tawakkul in matters which are not definite and completely certain. However, the predominant thought is that it will have a positive outcome and it will be beneficial – for example, medication for a sickness.

It will not be permissible for a layman to leave these means. For those whose Imaan is firm and their Tawakkul is strong, it will be permissible for them to leave these means.

3)    Tawakkul in matters which are imaginary and uncertain; i.e. there is a great amount of doubt in its outcome, whether it will be of benefit or not. Utilizing these means will be against Tawakkul.

More importantly, whether the means a person adopts proves to be beneficial or not, it is imperative for one’s Aqeedah/beliefs to be in order; It is compulsory for a person to believe that it is only Allah  who is the one that enables the means/medicines to be effective. One should look at it in this way: “I am not saved through my skill or the means that I adopt. I am not secured or protected merely due to the means that are implemented. Rather, I am protected, secured and safe due to the Will and Decree of Allah . The means and medications are of no effect without the Decree of Allah .”

Conclusion: Taking medication (whether it is medicine prescribed by a doctor or whether it is black seed, etc) and the utilization of such means is not against Tawakkul. A person is permitted to utilize whatever means he wishes, subject to;

1.     The means/medication which one adopts should be of benefit and not in conflict with any Laws of Shari’ah (in other words it should also be free and pure of Haraam ingredients).

2.     One should understand the medication to be merely a means and not something that will in itself directly cure one without the Decree of Allah Ta’aala.
