Studies and Marriage

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: What needs to be done if a girl wants to get married in order to stay away from zinaa (extra marital sex) but her parents rather want her to complete her studies before marriage?

A: Marriage is an important decision in life and should not be concluded merely to satisfy lust and passion. The girl should read the verses and tafseer of Surah Noor, ponder over them fearing Allah Ta’ala. She should educate herself on the Islamic perspective and objectives of Nikah. She should engage abundantly in istighfar, recitation of muawizatayn (last 2 Surahs of the Holy Quran), ayatul kursi and perform her salah punctually in order to ward off these evil whispers.

She should respectfully address her concerns to her parents regarding marriage. Alternately she could speak to some pious female elder in the family who she can confide in and ask her to speak to her parents to get her married or she may approach a pious experienced female in the community (e.g. the local Alim’s wife etc) and ask her to assist in this regards.

She should however not disrespect her parents in anyway and try to work within the acceptable parameters of Deen.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best
