Zakaat to Mother-in-law

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: My husband’s family live abroad, they are not well off at all and his mother needs cancer medicine. I think his father would have savings above the nisab (and not be eligible for zakat) but his mother on her own doesn’t have her own savings, would it be permissible to give my zakat directly to her?

A: If your mother-in-law is eligible to receive zakat then you may give your zakat to her.  However, your husband cannot give his zakat to her.

And Allah knows best.
