Looking after one’s parents in-law

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwa.org.au
Is looking after your parents in-law fard, wajib, sunnah or mustahab?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

It is one’s duty and responsibility to look after one’s parents and to treat them with kindness and compassion. Huge rewards have been mentioned in the ahaadith for carrying out this duty (Click here to read some ahaadith regarding this).

As for looking after one’s spouse’s parents (i.e. one’s parents in-law) and taking care of them, it is not compulsory to do so, although if one does do so he/she will receive huge rewards in the hereafter.
