Assalamualaykum

Is it permissible to wear a “walimah / wedding” dress?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

A wedding and walimah are happy occasions and recognised as such in Sharia. In principle, Sharia encourages one to rejoice on happy occasions. Wearing the best of attire on such occasions is one way of expressing this joy and happiness.

It is permissible to express happiness during walimah and wedding by wearing a walimah/ wedding dress[1]. However, in doing so, one should be careful in not violating the injunctions of sharia[2] and not imitating the modern forms of celebrating weddings including purchasing or hiring overly-expensive and unaffordable wedding gowns that also resemble the weddings of other non-Islamic cultures[3].
