Is it permissible to take, frame, or hang up pictures of live people?

Answered according to Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Q1. In islamic states;we see in several companys and shops and malls keeps the framed pictures of the leaders or sheikhs of that nation;is it permissible in any madhahab or in whole deen-ul-islam.

Q2. In such situations..,

As i am living in arab country…where fresh chickens and meats (ie,slaughtered infront of us)not availaible,’the local ulamas and majority of good believers also eat it,we cant go check it from the exporting state, its said to be approved by the importing state, that have halal seal etc…so is it allowed us to consume that chicken and meats or just avoid it from our menu

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

1. According to the Hanafī Mazhab, it is impermissible to take, frame, or hang up pictures of live people.[1]

We are not in a position to comment on the rulings of the other madhāhib; however, in principle, due to the severe warnings issued by the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ regarding pictures, it is always best to take the more precautious stance. Consider the following narration of Sahīh al-Bukhārī:

It is reported on the authority of Qāsim ibn Muhammad (rahimahullāh) that `Āishah (radiyallāhu `anhā) narrates:

I bought a cushion with pictures on it. When Allah’s Messenger ﷺ saw it, he kept standing at the door and did not enter the house. I noticed the sign of disgust on his face, so I said, “O Allah’s Messenger ﷺ! I repent to Allah and His Apostle. (Please let me know) what sin I have done.” Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, “What about this cushion?” I replied, “I bought it for you to sit and recline on.” Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, “The painters (i.e. owners) of these pictures will be punished on the Day of Resurrection. It will be said to them, ‘Put life in what you have created (i.e. painted).’ “The Prophet (ﷺ) added, “The angels do not enter a house where there are pictures.”[2]

2. Since we are unaware of the situation regarding imported meat in the UAE, we are unable to comment on the permissibility of consuming such meat. In such situations, you should seek out the pious `ulamā’ in your area and refer to them for guidance in such matters.
