Is life insurance permissible?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

This question pertains to the residents of United States as per the laws of United States. Is Selling Life Insurance and Health Insurance and Annuities or any other kinds of Insurance such as Car Insurance, Home Insurance etc. in United States to Non Muslims is Permissible? Is the commission that one earns from selling life insurance policies, retirement annuities, etc. to Non Muslims considered permissible? Is it permissible for one to work for an insurance company as an Insurance agent considering that the main source of income from this business is through commission from promoting and selling such products?

Request to kindly reply my question ASAP and in detail in the light of Quran, Sunnah, and Analogical deduction.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

If one is required by law to take out a haram conventional insurance scheme, one will be excused. Make Tawbah and Istighfaar and ask Allah to save you from the evil consequences of the haram.[1]
