I have a question regarding halal earnings. Throughout my work career I have tried to attain a halal job. Within any job that I have had e.g. call centre answering calls for customers about clothing, repairing houses admin work etc. at times I have felt as I have not done well in the job. Sometimes slacking being lazy or even being rude to customers. Since I have not performed my job to the best of my ability or at times not done my job properly due to laziness or being rude to customers has this made my income haraam? Also do I have to contact the companies and say that I never did my job properly? Here in the west people may find that a bit funny, however I fear that since I never did my job properly at times the rights of Allah and his creation have not been fulfilled. Is there any way I can purify my wealth?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu `alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We are pleased to see your concern for trying to fulfill the rights of fellow human beings and to make your income Halal. Despite your shortcomings in so far as your services are concerned, you are not liable to return any of the earnings that you have received. You may give charity as a means of further purifying your wealth, with this have the intention that in the future you would be more cautious in trying to be a good employee.[i] [i]

قال : ( وخاص كالمستأجر شهرا للخدمة ورعي الغنم ونحوه ) لأن منافعه صارت

مستحقة للمستأجر طول المدة فلا يمكنه صرفها إلى غيره فلهذا كان خاصا ، ويسمى أجير

الوحد أيضا ( ويستحق الأجرة بتسليم نفسه وإن لم يعمل ) لأنها مقابلة بالمنافع

قال: ( و الاجير الخاص الذي يستحق الاجرة بتسليم نفسه في المدة و ان لم يعمل؛ كمن استؤجر شهرا للخدمة او لرعي الغنم ) و انما سمي اجير وحد؛ لانه لا يمكنه ان يعمل لغيره ، لان منافعه في المدة صارت مسحقة له و الاجر مقابل بالمنافع، و لهذا يبقى الاجر مستحقا و ان نقض العمل.

(والثاني) وهو الاجير (الخاص) ويسمى أجير واحد (وهو من يعمل لواحد عملا مؤقتا
