Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I have grown my beard  sunah lengh, but find it very difficult to keep neat as i have curly hair. i constantly get tangled hairs which prove very painfull when brushing.

1) i’ve heard you can use hairgel on your beard. is this so? can one take whudhu with a gelled beard?

2) the hair directly under my bottom lip always catches food or icecream when i eat, as it curls upwards towards my nose. this is very anoying. am i allowed to shorten this hair for hygenic purposes?

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

A1.      If a person has such a thin beard that the skin beneath it can be seen, then it necessary to wash the skin. However if a person has a dense beard then it will necessary to wash that part of the beard which is on the face and not the portion exceeding the circumference of the face. Therefore if the gel is put in such a way that water reaches the required portion of the beard then it would be permissible to gel the beard and make wudu with the gel on.

A2.      It is not permissible to remove the baby beard. One can use hair straightening agents to overcome the mentioned difficulty.

And Allah knows best
