Swopping Eid Gifts

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q. If a few cousins (all girls) get together every Eid and decide that they are going to spend e.g. twenty rands on a gift. Each person picks a name and buys a gift for that one. Each person gives and receives a gift on the day of Eid. Each person ends up with a gift. Is this permissible?

A: It will be permissible if:
a) This is not considered a compulsory act.
b) No one is compelled to participate. If someone decides not to participate, that person is not shamed.
c) All those taking part are doing so happily, without being forced.
