Selling products prior to owning them.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalamu alaikum

I have a doubt regarding selling products online.

Do we need to possess the item before posting the ad. We post the ad, once if some one orders, buy it from the supplier and deliver it with additional profit.

My wife does like this, main supplier is in chennai. He will send the materials but we don’t pay him. Once we received the item, we take picture of it and post it in social media. If any order is received, then we sell it with some margin and send back the price quoted by the supplier. Unsold item will be returned to the supplier.

In India shipping is cheaper while we can’t do the samething to sell in abroad as shipping charges will be higher and difficulty in storage also.

Instead we are thinking of posting ad mentioning still the product is with the supplier (but not disclosing the supplier name) and if order is placed it should be shipped via us.

Is it correct methodology?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The methodology explained by you is unclear. You enquire if you need to possess the item prior to posting the ad. However, subsequently you state that the supplier from Chennai sends the material to you and you take a picture and post it on social media.

Kindly clarify.
