When the scandal about the cartoons of prophet Muhammad happened a muslim leader in Europe said almost crying: They imagine that this is how our beloved prophet looks like pointing to one of the blasphemous pictures. Does this mean that it is allowed to look at blasphemous pictures for legitimate reasons? Is the legitimacy that divides what otherwise would be a kufr act like if you watched them for curiosity?

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
If there is a legitimate reason to view such a picture, for example condemnation of the blasphemous picture, as in the case of the Muslim leader in reference, then one may do so.[1] It is not permissible to view such pictures out of curiosity.[2]
