Lost Count of Menstrual Cycle

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

As-salam عaleykoum wa rahmatulLahi wa barakatuhu. What should a woman do if she is completely lost as to her menstrual cycle ? The woman doesn’t know the duration of her haydh or the duration between two haydhs.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In point i) of your response, you state you do not experience continuous discharge. In point iv) you state your tuhr ranges between 14 and 17 days. It appears you now experience haydh and tuhr. If so, you should follow your new cycle of haydh.

Hereunder are the general rules of haydh, istihadah and tuhr.

  1. The minimum duration of haydh is 3 days and the maximum duration in haydh is 10 days.[1]
  2. If you bleed for any period between 3 days and 10 days even once, this will constitute a new habit for you. If you bleed for less than 3 days, it will be istihaadah. If you bleed for more than 10 days, then your current habit will remain, and everything beyond the habit will be considered istihaadah.[2] For example, your habit is 7 days of haydh and next month you bleed 11 days, your habit of 7 days will remain and the additional 4 days will be classed as istihaadah.
